Make it Count: From Spending to Investing

Time is, without question, our most precious commodity. Unlike money, possessions, or even opportunities, time is the one resource we can never get back once it’s spent. Every moment we trade—whether in work, leisure, relationships, or distractions—is a piece of our lives that cannot be recouped, replaced, or reclaimed. The choices we make with our time determine not only the course of our days, but the direction of our entire lives. That’s why it’s vital to treat time not as something to be carelessly spent, but as a treasure to be wisely invested.
The “days” we live in are full of distractions—some obvious, others subtle. News cycles fuel anxiety. Social media can spark comparison, jealousy, or outrage. Entertainment lures us into spending hours on things that do little to nourish our spirits. It’s easy to look up and realize another day—or week—has slipped by, consumed by things that didn’t bring us closer to God or our kingdom purpose.
When we turn on the news or scroll through social media today, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Headlines flash with updates about political tension, rapid advances in technology and AI, economic uncertainty, celebrity scandals, and heartbreaking stories from around the globe. Our feeds are filled with viral challenges, endless streaming options, and debates about everything from tariffs and immigration to the latest seemingly adulterous affair caught on camera for the world to see.
We’re living in an age of information overload. Notifications, breaking news, and entertainment are literally at our fingertips 24/7. While it’s important to stay informed, it’s even easier to get swept away—spending hours doomscrolling (take a minute and let that one sink in), binge-watching, or engaging in heated online debates that leave us emotionally drained and spiritually empty.
Paul, in Ephesians 5:16 (AMP) admonishes believers:
“Making the very most of your time [on earth, recognizing and taking advantage of each opportunity and using it with wisdom and diligence], because the days are [filled with] evil.”
Intentional Living in a Distracted World
God calls us to something different. He calls us to invest our time, not just spend it or lose it in the noise of the world. That might mean:
Turning off the news for a while to invest time in prayer.
Logging off social media to read your Bible or journal what God is speaking to you.
Choosing faith over fear when headlines are discouraging.
Using your voice and influence to share hope and kindness, instead of getting drawn into negativity.
The distractions of our age are real, but so is the opportunity to shine brighter and stand stronger when we feed our spirits and walk intentionally with God. Don’t let the chaos of the world dictate the course of your day. Instead, CHOOSE to make the most of every moment by investing time in what truly matters. Feed your spirit, and you’ll not only find peace in the midst of the storm—you’ll become a source of hope for others.
Take it from me!
