DAY 1: THE BATTLE YOU CAN'T SEE

Today’s Scriptures:

“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places." Ephesians 6:12 (KJV)

“(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)” 2 Corinthians 10:4 (KJV)

“And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.” Colossians 2:15 (KJV)

REMEMBER THE VICTORY

Before you go any further, settle this in your mind: the battle you’re facing is already decided. Say out loud, "I am taking part in a FIXED fight!" Keep repeating it until you believe it deep down.

We are in a battle that Jesus has already won, and He has given us the victory. This means we are not fighting to win, but fighting from a place of victory. Our goal is not to earn victory, but to stay in the victory Jesus won for us at Calvary.

DEVOTIONAL READING

Here’s one more thing to consider: the struggle we’re facing isn’t always what it looks like.

It might look like a financial crisis, a broken relationship, a tough doctor’s report, a child acting out, losing a job, or a season of mental and emotional exhaustion that won’t go away. But take another look. The Bible makes it clear that our struggle isn’t against people. The real battle happens in the unseen world, against Satan, who is a spirit we can’t touch, using weapons the world doesn’t understand.

This is where many of us get tired in the long fight: we try to fight a spiritual battle with natural tools. Here’s what that looks or sounds like:

We argue.

We worry.

We strategize.

We try to control.

We replay the problem in our minds over and over, sometimes losing sleep, as if thinking about it more will fix it.

But the enemy isn’t bothered by our worry. Our anxious plans don’t affect him. He doesn’t give in to our frustration. He only responds to one thing: the Name, the Word, and the authority of Jesus Christ, used by a believer who knows who they are and who they belong to.

FIGHTING THE RIGHT ENEMY

One of the enemy’s greatest and most often used tricks in a long fight is to convince us that the person is the enemy, the situation is the enemy, or even that we, ourselves, are the enemy. His goal is to get us to fight our spouses rather than fight for our marriage. His goal is to get us to fight our children rather than fight for their souls. His goal is to get us to fight our circumstances rather than fight from a place of victory. He desires that we fight ourselves, our worth, our faith, our identity, all instead of fighting from our seated position in Christ Jesus: “And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:” (Ephesians 2:6)

Let me encourage you to recognize who the real enemy is. It is not the person who may have hurt you. The enemy is not the bill that came in the mail, the diagnosis, the delay, or the disappointment. The enemy is the principality behind it. The power stirring it. The spiritual wickedness orchestrating it. Once we see things as they really are, we can fight the right way—on our knees, in the Spirit, and speaking God’s Word.

PUT ON THE WHOLE ARMOR

Paul didn’t tell us to put on some of the armor. He said the whole armor: “Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” (Ephesians 6:11). We shouldn’t just put on the helmet of salvation when we feel saved, the breastplate of righteousness when we feel worthy, or use the sword of the Spirit only when we feel strong.

Allow me a minute to share something personal with you.

My husband is a retired soldier. During his 24 years of active-duty service, he participated in an activity the Army called a TA-50 inspection. This was a routine and deeply important exercise in which every soldier would lay out all the weapons and gear the Army had issued to them. Every piece, every strap, and every tool. All of it spread out, in plain sight, and ready to be examined. The purpose? To make sure that every item was accounted for, in working order, and battle-ready. Nothing missing. Nothing broken. Nothing overlooked. This was done routinely so that when the moment came to deploy, there would be no time to search for what should have already been prepared. This inspection went a long way in helping the soldier stay battle-ready.

Through the years, when reading Ephesians 6, I’ve thought about that inspection. The truth is, God has already issued every believer a full set of spiritual armor. His armor! The belt of truth, to gird our loins. The breastplate of righteousness. The shoes that shod our feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace. The shield of faith that is above all, and whereby we can quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. The helmet of salvation. The sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. It has all been provided. It has all been issued. HALLELUJAH FOR THE ARMOR! But just having the armor isn’t the same as checking it. Having it isn’t the same as wearing it. And it’s definitely not the same as being ready for battle. The Bible doesn’t say the armor will simply appear on us in battle, or that God will put it on us. Instead, it says, “Put on the whole armor of God” (Ephesians 6:11). Those two words, ‘put on,’ are small but powerful. God gives us the armor, but we have to choose to wear it. Just like the soldier did a TA-50 inspection, we need to check our own armor. This isn’t about God’s armor—it’s perfect and has never failed. The real inspection is about us, the soldiers. Are we intentional in putting on the armor of God? Every piece? The armor is always ready. The real question is, are we wearing it, and are we wearing it right? In the long fight, it’s not enough just to have the armor or know about it. We have to put it on—every piece, every morning, every day. ALL OF IT. EVERY DAY. ON PURPOSE.

The enemy never takes a day off, and neither should our preparation. If you’ve been feeling worn out lately, ask yourself: Am I putting on my armor every day, or am I stepping onto the battlefield only half-prepared? There’s no shame in your answer. It’s simply an invitation to put on what God has already given you and stand strong again.

A WORD OF ENCOURAGEMENT:

You are not weak because the battle is long. You are not faithless because you are tired. You are not failing because you have not yet seen the breakthrough.

You are a soldier in a real battle. If the enemy is fighting you hard, it means there’s something great on the other side that’s worth fighting for. STAND! Just STAND! “Wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.” (Ephesians 6:13)

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

  1. What battle have I been fighting in the natural that the Lord may be calling me to fight in the Spirit?

  2. Who or what have I mistakenly identified as the enemy when the real enemy was hiding behind them?

  3. Which piece of the armor of God do I need to pick up most intentionally today (truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation, or the Word)?

PRAYER:

Heavenly Father, in Jesus' name, I pray that you will open my spiritual eyes today. Help me to see this battle the way You see it; not through the lens of fear, frustration, or fatigue but through the lens of Your Word and Your Spirit. Forgive me for the times I have fought with carnal weapons when You had already given me spiritual ones. Forgive me for blaming people, circumstances, and even myself when the real enemy was hiding behind them all along. Today, I put on the whole armor of God; I gird my waist with truth, and I cover my heart with righteousness. I shod my feet with the gospel of peace and take up the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is Your Word. I will stand, Lord. And having done all to stand, I will stand in Jesus' Name, amen!

TODAY’S DECLARATION OF FAITH (Declare this aloud over yourself today as often as needed):

“I am clothed in the whole armor of God. I do not wrestle against flesh and blood. My weapons are mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds. I will stand. I will not be moved. The battle belongs to the Lord and through Him, I am already victorious.”

*Truth Bomb #1

“I am not fighting for victory; I am fighting from victory.”

Tomorrow…In Day 2, The Power of Praying Partners, we’ll talk about why you’re not meant to fight alone, how to find the right people to pray with you, and the importance of keeping them updated as the battle goes on. Until then, stand.
