DAY 6: THE JOY THAT SUSTAINS YOU

Today's Scriptures:

"...for the joy of the LORD is your strength."

Nehemiah 8:10 (KJV)

"Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God."

Hebrews 12:2 (KJV)

"In thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore."

Psalm 16:11 (KJV)

REMEMBER THE VICTORY

Lift your head and remember:

You are not fighting for victory; you are fighting from victory. And the joy you walk in is not the result of the win; it is the fuel for the fight.

DEVOTIONAL READING

I am going to tell you something that you may not have realized:

Your joy is a weapon.

Not your happiness; happiness depends on circumstances. Happiness leaves when the bills stack up, when the diagnosis comes, when the prayer goes unanswered for the seventh year in a row.

But joy, biblical joy, is something else entirely. Your circumstances do not produce it. It is produced despite them. It is rooted in something deeper than the wind that's currently blowing against you. It is rooted in who God is and what He has already done.

And here is what makes joy so dangerous to the kingdom of darkness:

A warrior who has lost everything but kept their joy is a warrior the enemy cannot defeat.

Why the Enemy Targets Your Joy

Have you ever noticed that in a long fight, joy is one of the first things to go?

You may still have faith, and discipline might still be there. Even prayer might still be there. But somewhere along the way, the lightness leaves. The laughter goes quiet. The smile gets smaller. And before you know it, although you're still standing, you're standing heavy.

This is not an accident. This is the enemy's strategy.

Because the enemy knows something most believers forget:

Faith without joy is exhausting.

Faith with joy is unstoppable.

In Nehemiah 8:10, when the people of God were weeping over their sin and their broken city, Nehemiah did not say, "the discipline of the Lord is your strength." He did not say "the perseverance of the Lord is your strength." He did not say, "the prayer life of the Lord is your strength."

He said: "The joy of the LORD is your strength."

Joy is the engine. Joy is the fuel. Joy is what gives faith the stamina to go the distance.

Take the joy out of a believer, and you do not have to defeat them; you only have to outlast them. And the enemy is very patient with weary, joyless saints.

This is why he comes after your joy. Not because he hates your laughter but because he fears your strength.

The Joy That Set Jesus on the Cross

Look closely at Hebrews 12:2 with me. It contains one of the most stunning clauses in all of Scripture and is often overlooked:

"...who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross..."

Stop and let that land. Sit with that for just a minute.

Jesus endured the cross because of joy.

Not duty. Not obligation. Not because the Father forced Him. Joy.

"What was the joy set before Him?

It was you. Reading this. Right now. Tired, maybe. Not sure you're doing any of this right. Wondering if the blood really covered the parts of you that you don't talk about.

It did. That's what He was looking at when He said 'It is finished.' He was looking at this moment: you, here, finally starting to believe it."

Fellow warriors, hear this: joy is not the absence of pain. Joy is the presence of vision.

When we can see what God is producing on the other side of this fight, we can see the finished work even while we're in the unfinished moment; that is the joy that gives you strength.

This is why Paul, sitting in a Roman prison chained between two guards, could write: "Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice" (Philippians 4:4). Paul wasn't rejoicing because of the prison. Paul was rejoicing because of the promise.

He had eyes to see what the chains could not stop. And so do we.

Joy Is Spiritual Warfare

There is something supernatural that happens in the spirit realm when a child of God refuses to lose their joy in the long fight.

Hell gathers against the joyful warrior in a way it doesn't against a discouraged one because hell knows what discouragement cannot produce, and what joy can.

A joyful warrior:

-Cannot be controlled by circumstances.

-Cannot be manipulated by fear.

-Cannot be exhausted into surrender.

-Cannot be silenced by suffering.

-Cannot be predicted by the enemy.

Do you know what one of the most disorienting things in spiritual warfare is? Watching a warrior praise in the place where they were supposed to break.

That is what Paul and Silas did at midnight in Acts 16. They had been beaten, stripped, and thrown in the inner prison with their feet in stocks. By every natural measure, that should have been a moment for despair.

Instead, they sang.

And the Bible says, "suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one's bands were loosed" (Acts 16:26).

Remember this:

Praise in the prison opens doors.

Joyful praise expresses another level of faith. It says, "I will worship You before I see the answer." And Heaven responds to that kind of faith with a breakthrough that opens doors.

How to Fight for Your Joy in the Long Battle

So how do we actually keep our joy when the fight has gone on this long?

Worship before you feel like it.

Joy follows obedience, not the other way around. Don't wait until you "feel" like worshiping. Put on the song first. Lift the hands first. Open the mouth first. The feeling will catch up to the act of obedience. Every time.

Remember what God has already done.

The fastest way to revive joy is to remember. Open your prayer journal. Read the old, answered prayers. Recall the moments when God came through against all odds. "I will remember the works of the LORD: Surely I will remember thy wonders of old" (Psalm 77:11). Memory is medicine.

Laugh on purpose.

Let yourself be silly. "A merry heart doeth good like a medicine" (Proverbs 17:22). Laughter is not unspiritual; laughter is resistance.

Get into His presence daily.

Psalm 16:11 says, "In thy presence is fulness of joy." Not partial joy. Fulness of joy. There is a place, His presence, where joy is manufactured fresh every day. Worship music. The Word. Quiet prayer. Get there. Often.

Refuse to feed on the news, the noise, and the negativity.

You cannot drink discouragement all day and expect to taste joy at night. Guard what you consume. Every podcast, scroll, headline, and conversation is feeding something in you. Feed the joy. Starve the rest.

Choosing joy does not mean denying pain.

You do not have to fake a smile to be a faithful warrior. You do not have to slap a Bible verse over a wound that needs to be wept over. "Jesus wept" (John 11:35) is the shortest verse in the Bible and one of the most important. Even Jesus wept!

The kind of joy I am talking about is not a mood. It is a stance. It is the deep, unshakable confidence that, no matter what this moment looks like, God is good, God is faithful, and God is not finished. That joy can hold tears in one hand and praise in the other, and it loses nothing.

So, if you are weeping today, weep, but with hope. If you are tired today, rest, being sure to rest in His presence. If you are heavy today, lay it down. Just lay it down at the feet of the One who carries our sorrows.

And let the joy of the Lord, that quiet, deep, immovable joy, be your strength.

A FINAL WORD TODAY

Your joy is not gone. It is buried.

And the enemy wants you to believe it has been stolen forever, but it hasn't. Joy is not something you have to manufacture. It is something you have to uncover. It is still there underneath the weariness, underneath the let-down, underneath the long, drawn-out fight.

Today, let the Holy Spirit dig.

Let Him pull back the layers. Let Him remind you who you are. Let Him resurrect the laughter, the lightness, the song He put in your spirit before this battle ever began.

Because the same Jesus who endured the cross for the joy set before Him is with you now, and He is restoring the joy of your salvation (Psalm 51:12) right here, in the middle of the long fight.

Rejoice. And again I say, rejoice.

Key Insights to Hold Close

  • Joy is a sign of the presence of vision, not the absence of pain. When you can see what God is producing, you can endure what you're walking through.

  • Your joy is targeted by the enemy because he fears your strength. Faith with joy is unstoppable.

  • Praise in the prison opens doors that prayer (alone) in the prison sometimes will not. Prayer coupled with joyful worship is the highest level of faith.

  • Joy is not a mood; it is a stance. It can hold tears in one hand and praise in the other and lose nothing.

  • Your joy is not gone. It is buried. And the Holy Spirit is digging right now.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

Take a quiet moment with the Lord. Let the Holy Spirit speak gently:

1.     Where in this long fight has my joy gone quiet? Has it been stolen, or has it just been buried?

2.     What am I currently feeding daily that is starving my joy? (Media, conversations, mental loops, comparisons…)

3.     What is one act of worship (singing, dancing, laughing, praising) I can do today before I feel like it?

4.     What "joy set before me" can I begin to fix my eyes on the way Jesus did? What is God producing on the other side of this fight?

5.     What 5 things has God already done in your life that you can rejoice over right now, no matter what today looks like?

Prayer:

Heavenly Father,

I confess that during this long fight, my joy went quiet. When the fight got heavy, and the waiting got long, I lost my joy. Forgive me, Lord, for letting the enemy steal what You purchased for me with Your own blood.

Holy Spirit, I invite You to dig today. Pull back the weariness. Pull back the disappointment. Pull back every layer that has buried the joy You placed in me before this battle ever began. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation (Psalm 51:12).

Teach me to worship before I feel like it, to praise in the prison, and to laugh on purpose. Help me to keep my eyes on the joy set before me, the way my Savior kept His eyes on me through the cross.

I declare today that the joy of the Lord is my strength. Not my circumstance. Not my mood. Not my feelings. The joy of the LORD. And I will fight this fight from a place of rejoicing, because I know how this story ends: You win, and because I am hidden in You, I win! In Jesus' name, Amen.

TODAY’S DECLARATION OF FAITH

(Read it out loud and not in your head; with your mouth! Hell doesn't respond to thoughts.)

"His joy is my strength. Not my mood, but His joy. And I refuse to let a long fight rob me of what Jesus already bled for.

So today I'm doing it backward from how I feel. I'm going to worship before the breakthrough. Sing before I see anything shift. Praise Him from inside a situation that hasn't moved an inch.

And yeah, I might be crying while I do it. That's fine. Tears and worship aren't opposites. They rise together.

Because the same joy that carried Jesus through Friday is what's carrying me through today. I'm not fighting to win. I'm fighting because He already did.

So I'll rejoice. And when I run out of reasons to rejoice, I'll rejoice again. That's the whole instruction. That's what I'm doing.

Amen."

**Truth Bomb #6

"Joy is not a mood. It is a stance."

Tomorrow…

Tomorrow, we reach the final day, my friend.

In Day 7, Commissioned for the Long Fight, we close this 7-day journey not with a goodbye, but with a sending. The Lord is going to take everything He has built in you over these seven days—the truth, the covenant circle, the armor, the endurance, the voice, the joy—and He is going to commission you back into your battlefield as a transformed warrior. You did not pick up this devotional by accident. And you will not put it down the same.

Until then, rejoice. Find one reason. Speak it out loud. Sing it. Laugh once. Smile once. Lift your head once. The joy of the Lord is your strength, and your strength is not gone.
