A Truth About Change
Change is not simply a possibility in life—it is a certainty. As the founder of Renewing Your Mind Life Coaching, I have walked with many people through seasons of transition and transformation. Yet even I am sometimes surprised by how swiftly life can shift beneath our feet. Change, whether welcomed or unexpected, stretches us—sometimes painfully, sometimes beautifully, but always purposefully.
Change, a Sign of Life
Every living thing changes. It’s a sign of life. Trees shed their leaves and bud again. Children grow, mature, and eventually leave the nest (and boy can that one require stretching). Even the landscape of our hearts and minds changes, shaped by experience, loss, triumph, and love. To resist this truth is to resist life itself.
The Bible assures us that change is woven into the fabric of existence. Ecclesiastes 3:1 reminds us, “To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:” Whatever season you find yourself in, it is not permanent—but it is purposeful.
The Cost of Resisting Change
When we “kick against the pricks”—when we stubbornly resist the changes life brings—we invite unnecessary stress into our lives. Research shows that the inability or unwillingness to adapt to change increases anxiety and can negatively impact our physical health. A study published in the journal Stress and Health (2010) found that individuals who are more adaptive in the face of change report lower levels of stress and better overall health outcomes.
Resisting change is like trying to hold back the tide; the energy we expend can leave us exhausted and discouraged. Instead, what if we viewed change as an invitation to discover something new about ourselves? What if it was a call to grow into the person God is shaping us to be?
My Season of Change
This past year, my own life has been a whirlwind of changes—each one a lesson in letting go, trusting, and discovering new possibilities:
In 2024, on the very same day, my daughter married her fiancé (an amazing man) with little advanced notice and my son got engaged. My heart was full, and I was happy for them both, but I also felt the ache of shifting family dynamics.
In May 2025, my first grandson graduated from high school on delayed entry and, was scheduled to leave for the military only a matter of days after graduation. Just after his scheduled departure for basic training, my son is scheduled to be married only five short days later and suddenly, our household is slowly shifting from bustling to quiet—a true empty nest.
Only three months after my daughter’s marriage and my son’s engagement, I abruptly resigned from a position I loved. The loss was sharp and unexpected.
Yet, in the wake of these changes, new opportunities blossomed. I published two books on Amazon—something I had been working on but had not had the opportunity to complete. I developed an 8-week course for individuals newly giving their lives to Christ that will be taught in Uganda. Doors I could not have imagined opened as others gently closed. I am living proof that the pain of change can be the soil in which new dreams take root.
Encouragement for Your Journey
Change will come—sometimes gently, sometimes like a storm. But with every change comes an opportunity: to stretch your abilities, to uncover hidden strengths, and to trust more deeply in God’s faithfulness.
The apostle Paul encourages us in Romans 12:2: “...be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind...” Transformation is rarely comfortable, but it is always possible. God’s desire, I am convinced, is that our minds and lives are renewed through every season of change.
Finally
Embrace the inevitability of change. Let it remind you that you are alive, growing, and being renewed daily. The pain of letting go is real, but so is the joy that comes from stepping into the new things God has prepared for you. As you face change today, may your mind be renewed, your heart be encouraged, and your spirit find rest in the One who holds every season.
Blessings
Coach Kathryn
